Lawn Maintenance - A Step By Step Guide
Maintaining a lawn can be a simple process if you follow a few key steps. Here are some simple steps to maintain your lawn:
- Mowing: One of the most important aspects of lawn maintenance is mowing. Regular mowing helps to keep your lawn healthy and encourages new lateral growth. A good rule of thumb is, if you are cutting more than 1/3 of the leaf of at a time then you need to mow more frequently.
- Watering: Watering your lawn is essential, but be careful not to over water or under water. Too much water can lead to mold and fungus growth, whilst under watering can lead to dry patches. Water your lawn of a morning, deeply and less frequently, allows the soil to dry out between watering. 10-15mm per watering day, twice a week is a sufficient amount of water. Measuring the water in mm, not ml is critical. Catch cups are the best way to get accurate measurements.
- Fertilising: Fertilising helps to promote healthy growth in your lawn. Use a fertiliser with the appropriate Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium balance for the season you are in with help to prompt year round health lawn and be sure to follow the instructions carefully.
- Wetting Agent: A wetting agent can help improve water penetration into the soil, helping to reduce water waste and ensure your lawn receives the water it needs.
- Kelp: Applying a kelp-based fertiliser can help to promote root growth, reduce stress, and increase resistance to diseases and pests.
- Humic acid: Humic acid can help to improve the soil structure, increase nutrient uptake, and promote healthy root growth. Humic acid reduces leaking of nutrients and helps to make your fertiliser applications more efficient.
- Weed Control: Weeds can take over your lawn and make it look unsightly. You have two options when it comes to weeds killers, there are post emergent products that target weeds once they have germinated and then you have pre emergents that are designed to stop the germination of new weeds
- Aeration: Aeration or coring is the process of creating small holes in your lawn to allow air, water, and nutrients to penetrate the soil. This helps to promote healthy root growth and keeps your lawn looking lush and green.
- Vertimowing/Scarifying: Vertimowing involves removing the layer of dead grass, roots, and other debris that accumulates between the grass and soil over time. This helps to improved air and water circulation, improves the absorption of nutrients, enhances the appearance of your lawn and also increases the longevity of your lawn too by keeping it healthier for longer.
By following these simple steps, you can maintain a beautiful and healthy lawn. Remember to stay consistent and patient, as it may take time to see the results you want.
